For your Access Key to be successful, we recommend you follow these guidelines:

• Access Keys should be read and shared in an environment free of distractions.

• Access Keys can be read independently or shared with a friend, family member, carer or support worker to prepare for the visit.

• If sharing the Access Key with participant, help participant comprehend key points, consistently monitoring for level of understanding.

• If sharing the Access Key with participant, contextualised photographs can be used to summarise information and experiences.

• If using the Access Key as a reflective tool, make sure to enjoy the pivotal link between experience and recall after the visit has taken place.

• Once the visit has taken place, revisit the Access Key to celebrate success.

Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

The goal of the Disability Access & Inclusion Plan 2022-25 is to ensure people with a disability have equitable access to infrastructure and services provided by Latrobe City, in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Each year we hold a community consultation to identify ways to improve the liveability of Latrobe City for people with a disability. This consultation includes people with a disability and representatives from disability organisations. Issues and possible actions identified are investigated and inform the development of Latrobe City’s annual Disability Action Plan.

Disability Access and Inclusion Community Engagement Group

Disability Access & Inclusion Community Engagement Group (DAICEG)

The purpose of the DAICEG is to enable community stakeholders to provide Council with advice and guidance to assist with the development and implementation of the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2022-2025 and associated actions. The DAICEG also provides Council with input and feedback into the operation of Latrobe City Council services and programs to ensure that the needs of people with disability are considered or addressed.

The DAICEG forms part of Latrobe City Council’s commitment to community engagement to ensure our work is reflective of the community’s needs and aspirations. The DAICEG is advisory in nature and has no executive powers or any delegated decision-making or financial authority.

The DAICEG membership is comprised of individuals with diverse skills and lived experiences across Latrobe City selected through an Expression of Interest process.

Active & Liveable Communities

The Latrobe City Active & Liveable Communities team plays a vital role in the local community to respond to key issues identified by people with disabilities and their families. It draws on a broad range of resources to enable people with a disability to be included in the life of the community by:

Helping people and organisations to work together more effectively
Improving community understanding about the needs and aspirations of people with disabilities
Working with community organisations to develop policies and practices which are inclusive of people with disabilities
Developing and implementing projects which respond to needs and community priorities
Including the needs of people with a disability in future community planning
Supporting service providers to assist people with disability to live the sort of life they choose
Working out easy ways for people to access the information they need about services, community activities and issues.
