To display an advertising sign on private land you may need to apply for a planning permit, this will depend on a number of factors including:
- definition of the sign, as per Clause 73 of the Latrobe Planning Scheme.
- size and location of the sign
- zoning of the land
- If the heritage overlay affects the land.
The most common advertising signage found is defined under Clause 73 (Outdoor Advertising Terms) includes:

A sign illuminated by internal lighting or which contains lights or illuminated tubes arranged as an advertisement. |
Major promotion |
A sign which is 18m2 or greater that promotes goods, services, an event or any other matter, whether or not provided, undertaken, sold or for hire on the land or in the building on which the sign is located. |

The Latrobe Planning Scheme outlines permit requirements for each type of sign (Clause 52.05). These requirements ensures that signage complements (rather than dominates) the natural and built environment, while helping with directions and identifying businesses. If a sign is more than one type, it must comply with the more restrictive requirements.

Signs on Public Land
To display a on public land, you need to get permission from the land owner first before you lodge a planning permit application. Please talk to Council’s Property Department to seek permission. This is a different process from the planning permit application process.
VicSmart application for signage
In Latrobe, your application may qualify for the VicSmart process if you are seeking to display an advertising sign in an Industrial 1,2 or 3, or a Commercial 1 or 2 Zone.
The sign must not:
- be within 30m of land (not a road) in a Residential Zone.
- be a pole sign, a sky sign, a reflective sign, internally illuminated, floodlit, electronic or animated.
- exceed a total advertising area of 10m2.
