Latrobe City Council is thrilled to announce the Moe Revitalisation Project Stage 2, completed in September 2023, has won the Regional Achievement Award as part of the 2024 AILA Landscape Architecture Awards.
This Awards program promotes the achievements and work of landscape architects in Australia and provides the opportunity for public and peer recognition. The Regional Achievement Award is a cross-category award given in recognition of landscape architecture that has made a significant difference to improving built and natural environments and healthy communities in regional Australia.
The Moe Revitalisation Project Stage 2 transformed the existing car park and old skate park on George Street in Moe, into a vibrant shared youth precinct and community open space. The precinct includes a skate park, family areas, BBQs, a relaxing garden, a play space and large areas of lawn for events.
Mayor of Latrobe City Council Darren Howe said the project has helped to revitalise Moe’s central business district.
“This location was selected to allow for maximum use of the facility by all community members. With its proximity to many local cafes, transport, and shopping facilities, it’s in a prime position to increase visitation to the area and attract more customers to local businesses,” said the Mayor.
“This precinct has delivered key infrastructure that will facilitate urban change, boost the economy and improve community health and wellbeing through creating an inclusive space for locals and visitors to enjoy recreational activity.
"The project's success was driven by the Project Reference Group, comprising community and business representatives who worked with Council officers and the architect to help inform the design and achieve the best outcome for our community."
The project was the second stage of the Moe Rail Precinct Revitalisation project. The first stage saw the construction of the Moe Library and Service Centre and sought to stimulate the central business district with the creation of a local civic space.
The project will now progress to the 2024 AILA National Landscape Architecture Awards that will be announced in Melbourne in October.
