In June 2023, Latrobe City Council completed the Landslips Remediation Program associated with the June 2021 floods and storms. 42 landslip sites were identified following this storm event and 30 more sites from three other disaster events. In total, in addition to its regular, ongoing Capital Works Program, Council investigated and repaired landslip damage at 72 sites.
The magnitude of this remediation program may have been insurmountable without the support of the Regional Roads Victoria and its Alliance with Fulton Hogan. Through this arrangement over a dozen subcontractors were utilised, from the Latrobe Region and elsewhere, to deliver the overall program.
In recognition of this achievement, Council was recently successful in obtaining a Project Award for ‘Disaster Recovery – Restoring community infrastructure after severe weather events’, at the recent Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (Victoria), Engineering Excellence Awards 2023.
Work to repair several sites damaged by the 2022 storms is scheduled to take place at two locations on Traralgon Creek Road.
Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the completion of these works was a huge effort for all teams involved.
“To recognise just how hard our teams worked and the scale of the project of works, the Landslips Remediation Program recently won an award for disaster recovery from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (Victoria),” said the Mayor.
“All of the work completed included prevention of future landslips, such as construction of rock retaining walls or concrete retaining walls in place of earth road embankments and improvements to drainage infrastructure where needed.
“We recognise the remediation works resulted in temporary inconveniences such as road closures and detours and acknowledge the understanding and patience of impacted communities during those times. Your cooperation and support allowed works to be completed in a timely and efficient manner.
“It was a true team effort with at least 100 people working on the Landslip Remediation Program. I would like to acknowledge and thank all of them for their efforts and for helping to make our community road infrastructure safe.”
