Maternal and Child Health

The Universal Maternal and Child Health service offers support and advice with:

• Regular checks on your child's health, development and growth, through visits to a Maternal and Child Health centre
• Women and parent health issues including post natal depression

An additional support service for families working through complex needs and issues, and when the family needs more intensive support. Families can access this service through a referral from the Universal Maternal and Child Health service, or other community support services.

You can access the support of a Maternal and Child Health Nurse as you need.  However, there are ten key age and stage visits you are encouraged to participate in:

• 2 weeks - home visit currently at the service due to COVID-19
• 4 weeks
• 8 weeks
• 4 months
• 8 months
• 12 months
• 18 months
• 2 years
• 3 and a half years

Breastfeeding your baby is not always straight forward. Many families need extra support and care to have the best breastfeeding experience possible. Our breastfeeding service is free and appointments can be made in advance or on the day by calling 5128 6128.

We can help with all aspects of breastfeeding, including attachment concerns, sore/damaged nipples, too much or not enough milk, mastitis, thrush, and more.

Where: Traralgon Maternal and Child Health Centre,  corner of Breed and Kay Streets, Traralgon.

When: Mondays via appointment (excluding public holidays).

Who: A lactation consultation or MCH nurse with extra experience with breastfeeding.

What to expect: You will have an opportunity for a nurse to observe your baby feeding, listen to your story, offer suggestions, and work with you to help achieve your breastfeeding goals. 

You may be at the session for 15 minutes or an hour or more – depending on how willing your baby is to feed and how many families attend the session. 

What to bring:

• A pram or blanket for the floor to put your baby on
• A drink for yourself
• Nappies, wipes, change of clothing for baby if needed 
• Any aids you like to use
• when feeding – eg: nipple shields, pillow etc.
