Council elections are conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). Further information regarding the election process, enrolling to vote, how to vote, previous election results, and more, is available on the VEC website.

The next Latrobe City Council election is being held via postal vote in October 2024.

Electoral structure

Current electoral structure

Latrobe City Council has four wards with nine Councillors total:

Central Ward with two Councillors
East Ward with four Councillors
South Ward with one Councillor
West Ward with two Councillors.

Future electoral structure from October 2024

An electoral representation advisory panel reviewed Latrobe City Council's electoral structure in 2023-24. This review changed the electoral structure.

The changes will take effect at the October 2024 council election.

It will have nine Wards with one Councillor in each Ward:

Budgeree Ward
Jeeralang Ward
Loy Yang Ward
Moe Ward
Morwell River Ward
Newborough Ward
Tyers Ward
Yallourn Ward.

Enrolment for the 2024 Council election closed at 4pm 7 August 2024.

State-enrolled voters – residents of Latrobe City

To enrol to vote in the Latrobe City Council election, or for more information about enrolling for local council elections, visit the VEC website:

Council-enrolled voters – own property or business

You can apply to enrol directly with Latrobe City Council If:

you are an owner ratepayer, occupier ratepayer or represent a corporation and
you are not enrolled to vote on the State electoral roll at an address within Latrobe City.

You do not have to be an Australian citizen to become a council-enrolled voter.

To enrol, please submit your application to Latrobe City Council as soon as possible so that you can vote in the upcoming October 2024 election. Don’t delay.

Do I have to vote?

Enrolment is voluntary but voting is compulsory for everyone enrolled to vote. If you are enrolled to vote and do not vote you may receive a fine from the VEC.

If you enrol you will stay enrolled for all future elections until you are no longer eligible. For example, if you sell your property or become a State enrolled voter within the local Council area.

As the level of government closest to the community, it is important to find quality candidates who represent the needs, values, and aspirations of Latrobe City’s community. Latrobe City Council is looking for people to Stand for Council who are committed and motivated and have a passion to create positive outcomes for the Gippsland region and its future.

Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC)

The VEC administers local government elections and provides support to candidates.

Electoral office

Candidates can contact the VEC’s Election Manager for Latrobe City. They will be based at the Moe Town Hall, 69 Albert Street Moe 3852. The office will be open during business hours from 9 September to 23 October 2024. The office will have extended hours on 24 October 2024 (8pm close).

Declaration of the election

The VEC will declare the election results at Kernot Hall on 11 November 2024 at 2pm.

Eligibility to be a Councillor

To nominate as a candidate in a local Council election, you must:

be at least 18 years of age
have completed the mandatory Local Government candidate training before nominating
be an Australian citizen
be enrolled to vote in the Council you are contesting
not be disqualified from being a Councillor.

Election period

Councils must comply with special arrangements in the lead up to elections, during what is known as the election period.

Election Candidate Information Request Register

Latrobe City Council recognises that all election candidates have equal rights to information relevant to their election campaigns from the Council administration, and is committed to ensuring transparency in the provision of all information and advice during the election period.

In accordance with the Latrobe City Council Election Period Policy an Information Request Register will be maintained for the election period from 12pm 17 September 2024 until 6.00pm on 27 October 2024.

This register will be updated and available for public inspection here, and will record requests by all Councillors and candidates for information that relate to electoral matters, and the responses to these requests.
