Latrobe City Council acts on community safety

Latrobe City Council is aiming to enhance community safety with the creation of a new committee for the municipality.

Council voted to establish the Latrobe City Community Safety Committee at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday 12 April.

“A Latrobe City Community Safety Committee will address municipality-wide community safety issues to inform a consistent approach across partners within the municipality,” Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Sharon Gibson said.

The municipal-wide Safety Committee is based on expanding the approach taken by the successful Traralgon Central Business District Safety Committee which will be discontinued to allow a municipal-wide approach to safety matters.

“If there is a safety problem within a specific community then we can form a sub-committee to work on that,” Cr Gibson said.

It is proposed that the new committee meets quarterly, with sub-committees being convened to deal with specific issues on a time-limited basis.

Recruitment of members to the Committee will be undertaken and a future report will be presented to Council for endorsement of the proposed membership.
