Latrobe City Council Advocates for Equitable Transition to Net Zero

Media Release

Wednesday 19 June 2024

Latrobe City recognises that diverse energy sources will be required in the future to meet growing demands and remains committed to advocating for responsible and sustainable energy solutions that serve the best interests of our community and future generations.

At this point in time, Council does not have an adopted position on Nuclear Energy as it isn’t currently an option in Australia.

Achieving net zero by 2050 is critical for all Australians, regardless of the technologies used to achieve this. We view the energy transition as an opportunity to leverage our strengths and the 100 years associated with keeping the state of Victoria powered. We are ready to support job creation and industry development that will help achieve net zero.

Any proposal to achieve net zero, that would result in the development of projects in Latrobe City, must be considered in a transparent manner that includes widespread engagement with the community and carefully evaluates the social, economic, and environmental benefits.

As Australia’s most heavily impacted and transitioning region, we stand with our community to support the equitable transition of our region’s industry landscape and economy. Council is committed to attracting investment to support job growth, including in the transitioning energy sector.

Investment attraction is critical to reshaping the region’s economy. Our Transition identifies a range of strategies and actions that support our regional City to foster economic diversification by attracting new industries, supporting local entrepreneurship, and promoting innovation.

Our Transition plan highlights opportunities in emerging sectors such as new energy, advanced manufacturing, tourism, and creative industries, where we aim to generate new employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

We call on all levels of Government to collaborate with Council and the community to ensure the region is a beneficiary of a clean energy economy. A collaborative approach will ensure Latrobe City is well-positioned to harness opportunities in achieving net zero and deliver positive outcomes for the Latrobe community through the creation of new jobs and career pathways.
