Road safety information

The program has great tips about road safety:

  • Always Stop, Look, Listen and Think at roads, driveways and in carparks
  • Always cross at a crossing if there is one nearby
  • Children up to the age of 10 or 11 should walk with an adult. Younger children should always hold hands with an adult when crossing the road
  • Wear a helmet, bright coloured clothing and shoes when riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades
  • To get a good helmet fit, use the two-finger rule- 2 fingers above the eyebrow and 2 fingers inside the chin strap

Importance of active travel to school

When you walk, ride, scoot or skate to school, this helps you to build physical activity into your day. However, the health benefit is not limited to just your physical health, it also supports overall wellbeing and the creation of lifelong healthy habits.

Other wellbeing benefits include:

  • Confidence: You can learn important skills such as road safety and awareness of your surroundings. This can help promote independence and resilience.
  • Boosts energy levels: increasing your activity levels can help you concentrate better in the classroom.
  • Being social: active travel is a great opportunity for you to have fun and to socialise with other children on the way to school.

Fun things to do while being active

  • Go on a scavenger hunt
  • Play I-spy with letters or colours
  • Play 20 questions – Carry something in your hand and have others guess what it is in there over the course of your walk.
  • Play some fun games such as ‘Don’t step on the lines game’ and ‘The grass is lava game’.
  • Copy the leader and do fun activities like dancing, jumping, hopping and skipping along the way.
  • Car Colour: Everyone chooses a car colour at the beginning of the walk and each person tallies how many of their coloured cars they see. The highest total when reaching your destination wins.
