All cats and dogs aged 3 months and over must be registered.
Cats cannot be registered unless they are microchipped and desexed (proof must be provided).
Dogs cannot be registered unless they are microchipped (proof must be provided).
This includes dogs and cats moving to Latrobe City from another council, which requires completion of the below form:
Proof includes:
- Desexing certificate (required)
- Microchipping certificate (required)
- Pension card (if applicable)
- Animal membership card and pedigree papers (if applicable for desexing exemption)
Renewing pet registration
All dogs and cats must be microchipped (proof required) when renewing an existing registration.
Registration fees are due by 10 April each year.
Renewable lifetime registration tags are now used. This means that you will not receive a new tag every year with your animal registration reminder.
Cancelling or updating registration for pet registered in Latrobe City

This form cannot be used to request the transfer of ownership for your pet or changing your name.
Phone 1300 367 700 or email Latrobe@latrobe.vic.gov.au to advise us of the reference or tag number of your pet to ensure you do not receive reminder notices.
You can apply for a pro-rata refund if pet is deceased or new owner has paid new registration with proof by completing the Local Laws Refund form.
New tag
If your animals tag is lost or damaged request a replacement tag at any service centre.

Domestic animal businesses
Domestic animal business renewal or new application to conduct a business $281 No concession entitlement. Extra fee payable annually at time of audit - $29 per adult animal audited.
Pensioner concession
Current Centrelink Pensioner Concession cardholders are eligible for a 50% discount off dog/cat registration fees. Present your current card when paying. Holders of healthcare cards are not eligible for this discount.
The state government levy of $4.51 for dog registration and $4.51 for cat registration, is primarily used to fund responsible pet ownership educational programs.
Applying for Assistance Dog zero fee registration
Do you live with a disability and require the help of an assistance dog? If so, you may be eligible to receive free registration for your assistance dog.
Under the Domestic Animals Act 1994, Council can consider a zero dollar registration for an assistance dog with proof of the following;
- The applicant has a disability that necessitates an assistance dog
- The assistance dog is trained to alleviate the effect(s) of the disability
- The assistance dog has completed obedience training provided by a dog trainer
- The assistance dog is at least 12 months old
- The assistance dog is desexed.
