Why are Road Reseal works being carried out?
Bituminous spray seals need to be resealed every 10 to 15 years as the surface becomes porous, brittle and/or slippery due to UV exposure.
Small cracks start to form in the seal, allowing water to seep into the road pavement, causing potholes and soft spots to form in the road.
The road reseal program ensures the spray seal provides a new waterproof barrier, preventing failures in the pavement. The new seal also provides a more skid resistant surface, resulting in safer roads.
This proactive maintenance program ensures our road network retains its quality and extends the life of the existing road pavement, providing long term cost savings.
Where do Road Reseal works occur?
Across the majority of Council’s sealed road network in both rural and urban areas.
The program covers approximately 8% of the network each year on a 10-15 year cycle. CBD streets, roundabouts, court bowls and some urban courts have asphalt surfaces and receive a different treatment.
What will happen?
Stage 1
Urban streets that have issues with kerb, channel, and drainage pits will identified and those issues will be repaired to ensure that water gets into the stormwater system.
Rural roads that have issues with drainage will have the shoulders graded to ensure that water flows off the road and into the drains.
Stage 2
Areas of the road that are failing or already failed are identified and repaired.
This involves removing the existing pavement and replacing with either asphalt (usually) or stabilised crushed rock (occasionally).
Ruts and depressions are also repaired to ensure that water flows off the surface.
Stage 3
The bituminous spray seal is sprayed on the road by a tanker to form the thin waterproof membrane.
It is covered with a thin layer of aggregate, and then embedded into the bitumen by rolling with a multi wheeled roller to form a skid resistant surface.
Stage 4
Any loose stones are swept up approximately one to two weeks after reseal works have occurred.
This delay allows the traffic on the road to further embed the aggregate.
Lower traffic roads will have a longer delay between sealing and sweeping.
Following sweeping, any linemarking that was present before sealing is replaced.
When will the works happen?
Stage 1 and 2 can be completed at any point between April and October prior to the road being resealed.
Stage 3 and 4 generally commence in November and are concluded by April.
Please Note: Due to heavy rain, the 2022/23 Road Reseal Program has been slightly delayed. Stage 1 and 2 is expected to be completed by early December. With Stage 3 and 4 beginning in mid-December.
What information will I get?
Residents on the selected streets in the program will receive an information flyer providing more detail on the information above approximately one month before the start of stages 1 and 2, and another approximately one month before the start of stage 3.
Our sealing contractor will then complete a letter drop 1-2 days prior notifying the residents of the specific date for sealing.
