About Latrobe Regional Airport

A Vital Community and Economic Asset  

Latrobe Regional Airport is wholly owned by Latrobe City Council on behalf of the residents and citizens of Latrobe City.   The Airport is a key economic and community facility, which offers:

  • Significant and growing employment opportunities with around 120 staff engaged by the various businesses located at the Airport including GippsAero, East Coast Aviation, and the Latrobe Valley Aero Club;
  • Vital business and community services, including air charter, the acclaimed Helimed 1 air ambulance and rescue helicopter, branches of the CFA and SES and a DSE permanent base for aerial fire fighting aircraft;
  • Valuable recreational and tourism facilities, including flying lessons from three flying schools, tandem skydiving, gliding, joy fights, aerobatic flights, Air Cadets and private hangars for recreational aviators.

The Airport is managed by the Latrobe Regional Airport Board and its staff, who are empowered by Council to develop each of these activities, whilst operating the Airport in a safe, professional and financially viable manner.

Key Statistics

The Latrobe Regional Airport operates with an unconditional Civil Aviation Safety Authority Licence V007.

The airport consist of:

  • Two all weather runways - 03/21:1430 metres sealed to 23 metres wide and 09/27: gravel, 919 metres and 18 metres wide, and a grass strip 03L/21R 537 metres;
  • Pilot activated lighting (PAL) on 03/21;
  • Radio Navigation Aid, NDB;
  • Sealed Apron;
  • Automatic Weather Information Broadcast (AWIB);
  • AFRU Beep Back;
  • Aviation Fuel, AVGAS and AVTUR;
  • Modern air-conditioned terminal building;
  • Sealed public car-park
  • On-site aircraft construction and maintenance facilities;
  • Emergency facilities including State Emergency Service, Country Fire Authority, DSE fire bomber base and Helimed helicopter ambulance
  • Charter flights available to anywhere in Australia;
  • Serviced land available with direct access to runways for aviation related business activities.

 

General Aviation Movements

General Aviation comprises of a range of flying activities commonly including charter, flying training, agriculture work, aerial work, community service flying and private or business flying.   Accurate account of these movements through Latrobe Regional Airport (LRA) is not possible as the airport has an open access regime. However, it is estimated that the following categories used the Airport during 2006:-
