Youth Council activities during 2009

Some of our activities have included:

Sister Cities Youth Conference in Tamworth

A Youth Council delegation attended the annual Sister Cities Australia Youth Conference in Tamworth in July to learn more about sister city relationships, develop leadership skills, discuss youth engagement, and build networks with other young leaders across Australia.

Visit to Parliament House

Our Youth Councillors joined with participants from our Youth Leadership Program in June to visit Parliament House in Melbourne and meet with members of the Shadow Cabinet. The trip provided an opportunity for youth councillors to express their views on local issues and recommend strategic responses to State Government politicians. Participants also undertook a tour of Parliament House and attended Public Question Time.

Development of Latrobe 2026

Youth Council representatives attended a community forum aimed at identifying appropriate mechanisms to engage the community about the development of a joint Council and community vision for Latrobe City. Youth Council hope to play a key role in the development of this strategy and help represent views of local youth in this process.

Meeting with State Government Minister for Youth Affairs

Youth Councillors participated in a youth forum during June hosted by James Merlino MP, Minister for Youth Affairs. Topics discussed at the forum included the issue of bullying, the impact of Black Saturday bushfires on youth and the availability of youth services in regional areas.

Planning for the Moe Activity Centre

Youth Council representatives played an active role in a two-day community forum designed to generate ideas and commence planning for the Moe Activity Centre and redevelopment of the Moe transit precinct. Youth Council will continue to be involved in the development process for this project.

ANZAC Day Services

Youth Councillors attended a range of ANZAC Day services across Latrobe City to pay  respect to those who gave their lives for our country. Youth Councillor Ben Huke was a guest speaker at the Morwell service.

YouthFest (as part of the Gippsland Emergency Relief Concert)

Latrobe City Youth Councillors participated in this event and assisted with the running of a number of activities including a badge-making machine, X-box Guitar Hero competition and a SpeakOUT wall for youth to express their views on local issues 

Skate and BMX Plan

Youth Councillors provided a submission to this draft plan after canvassing views of a broad range of local young people on existing and proposed Skate and BMX facilities in Latrobe City. Youth Council hopes to be actively involved with the implementation of this plan over the next few years.

Youth Info Card

Youth Council is currently working on the development of a youth info card that will provide information on local support agencies and services for young people aged 12-25 in Latrobe City. The wallet sized card will also provide a range of discounts and privileges.

 

Youth Council activities during 2008

Youth Council was very active in 2008 with a number of projects undertaken. Some of these included:

'Building Volunteerism in Latrobe' television commercial

A number of youth councillors featured in a new television commercial to promote the "Building Volunteerism in Latrobe" program run by Latrobe City Council. This advertisement was shown on regional television stations during International Volunteer Week.

Meeting with the Federal Minister for Youth

Youth Council had the opportunity to meet with the Federal Minister for Youth, Hon. Kate Ellis during June 2008. This forum provided an opportunity for youth councillors to discuss their views and suggestion on a range of issues including youth homelessness, the graduated licensing system, and binge drinking.

Attendance at Sister Cities Australia Conference

In late June/early July of this year, four youth councillors attended the Sister Cities Australia (SCA) Youth Conference in Gosford, NSW alongside the adult SCA conference. Over 60 Youth from across Australia joined together in different team building activities and group discussions.

Graduated Licensing System

A concern raised during the year was the effects of the graduated liscensing system (GLS) on young people in rural areas. Youth Council was consulted about the topic and sent a letter expressing concerns to Mr. Tim Pallas, Minister for Roads and Ports.

Attendance at Latrobe City Rememberance Day Service

A number of our youth councillors attended RSL Rememberance Day services across Latrobe City on 11 November to lay wreaths in commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. Youth Councillor Sarah Lewis read the poem - In Flanders Field, as part of the Traralgon RSL service

Other highlights have included:

  • Participation in the Young Leaders of Today Course for local youth from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
  • Attendance at the Central Gippsland Regional Youth Network 'YouthFest - Make a Noise' event to engage with local youth on topical issues.
  • Regular meetings with the Latrobe City Mayor, Bruce Lougheed, to discuss youth related issues.
  • Guest Speakers from:
    • Local Politics
    • Consumer Affairs Victoria
    • Whatever Youth Diversity Project
    • Quantum Youth Residential Service
    • Monash Medical School
  • Attended the Welcome Reception for Takasago student delegation
  • Assisted with the running of Japanese Day
  • Attendance at Ordinary Council Meetings and a quarterly dinner with the Latrobe City Councillors

Youth Councillor Sarah Lewis was chosen to be a flag-bearer at the 2008 Australian Sister Cities Conference.

Meeting with Monash Medical Students

Youth Councillors meet with first-year medical students from Monash University in November 2008 to discuss rural health issues affecting young people.
