Fire Prevention Requirements for Latrobe City Residents

Urban Areas

FIRE HAZARDS should be removed in Urban areas of Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, Boolarra, Churchill, Glengarry, Traralgon South, Tyers, Yallourn North, Yinnar, Flynn and Toongabbie as follows.
Cut all grass, weeds, etc over a height of 75 millimetres on the property and the adjoining nature strip and maintain throughout the fire danger period.

Rural Living Premises/ Rural Land

Cut all grass, weeds, undergrowth, etc over a height of 75 millimetres and remove any other combustible material e.g. timer offcuts, tree prunings, fallen tree limbs, old car tyres, etc form a fire break area within 30 metres of any building and 10 metres inside any boundary fence. The 10 metre boundary may by cleared by either slashing or ploughing and must be maintained throughout the fire danger period. 

Before the Bushfire Season - prevent/prepare

  • If possible, make a firebreak around your home (use a mower, spade, rake), trim branches well clear of the house. Clear the roof and gutters of leaves, twigs, etc.
  • Remove all rubbish, leaf litter and native shrubs growing too close to the house. Keep grass short and green. Link to Slashing Contractors list.
  • Fire wire screens to doors, windows, vents and enclose all gaps, roof eaves and the area under your house.
  • Keep a ladder handy for roof access (inside and out) and fit hoses to reach all parts of the house and garden. If water is not connected, obtain a high pressure pump.
  • Store wood, fuel, paints, etc. well clear of the house.
  • Check you have adquate insurance cover for bushfire.
  • Decide on a household plan to either leave early or stay to protect you home during a bushfire.
